Costa Rica Land Expropriations
A few cases remain in which U.S. citizens have yet to be compensated for land expropriated by the government in the 1970s or 1980s.
Unexecuted expropriation claims cloud title in other cases. However, changes to Costa Rican law in 1995 place more restrictions on the government's ability to expropriate land and require compensation prior to expropriation. The new law also provides for arbitration in the event of a dispute.
